Police stated they were notified by a resident who found a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored liquid

Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state early analysis indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any harm in connection with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A senior political figure commented the incident left him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
