TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Material Elimination

Based on TikTok, the service has removed problematic content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Marketplace Activities

Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these groups, messages display dark colored packages with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
