The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
