Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
