A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
